Wagner also was a founder of opera and he was German.

This role is written for a darker tenor like domingo and Corelli. Pavarotti should not sing this song. So you can no compare the two voices using this song, it doesn't make any sense.

whatever you like guys, technically or not, his performance was really good.

It's all subjective. In my opinion, which is shared by millions of people and experts, Placido Domingo is in a class of his own, scoring off Pava and Carreras with total ease.

Domingo could act, he was a good musician, but he was by no means the best singer, by a long long way.Pavarotti certainly could keep up with Domingo, it was Domingo who struggled and failed to keep up with Pavarotti back when both were in their primes.Even Carreras was a better singer than Domingo.Try listening to Gigli, di Stefano, Gigli, Bjorling, Tucker, Pavarotti, del Monaco... there are dozens who are superior to Domingo.
Calvarienberg (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Well, I'm a sober-minded person. I'm not out to pick up a silly fight about such a subjective issue. In my opinion there is nothing better than Domingo. He is the measure of all things, he absolutely dominates the scene.Pava was a nice, but shallow man. He had an impressive corpulence. An extremely constrained voice. That's it.In the end he just wasn't able to keep up with Domingo's sublime, untouchable talent. No one can (so far).

I'm afraid it's your comment that's ridiculous, Domingo more effortless than Pavarotti? Look at Domingo strain to hit that top note here, the result is closer to a shout. He was FAR better at supporting the sound. Domingo's passagio is pretty awful as well... I guess he just never understood how to approach the top properly, which is why we hear that strained pushed noise.Domingo was far from the greatest tenor ever, he was probably the most overrated tenor ever, I'll give him that.
Calvarienberg (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
What a ridiculous comment. Pavarotti was so inferior to Domingo. Whenever I listen to Pavarotti I can almost sense the pressing to the vocal cords he used to produce decent tones. He never had much of a talent as a tenor, his voice is easily remembered, but it wasn't aesthetic. Too much effort.Domingo on the other hand is - at least for me - the best tenor ever. His mastery and beautiful timbre are absolutely unrivalled. Pavarotti in his best years was never able to compete against.

You are very wrong there, Pavarotti was technically a far superior singer to Domingo.
