Carmen "Flower Song" - Placido Domingo, 1978
Placido Domingo sings "La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" from Georges Bizet's "Carmen".Vienna State Opera. Carlos Kleiber conductor. December 9, 1978. Directed by Zeffirelli for stage and Austrian television. In prison I kept lovinglyThe flower you had thrown at me.Though it had faded and turned dry,It still smelled sweet as time went by;And I would put that special flowerOn my closed eyes, hour after hour.Drunk with that fragrance, I felt light,And there I saw you in the night! At times I would begin to hate you, To curse you and to execrate you,To say: why did it have to beThat fate brought her so close to me!Then I thought that faith had defied me,And I only felt deep inside me,I only felt but one desire,But one desire, one hope, one yen,To see you, Carmen, yes, see you again! For all you needed was to be there,To throw a fleeting glance my way,To have full mastery of me there,Oh, Carmen, dear! And all you did with me was play!Carmen, I love you!Translation by Jacob Lubliner Libretto : Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy Air de la fleur

too bad for you. All you've noted was how long your attention span is. Or should I say short?

Well I listened to all videos by all OS of this on YT and this is the one I chose to send to a friend - even out of Domingo's other recordings of it. She loves it as much as I do.

I don't like the opera either. I like this aria very much. That goes for alot of opera's, (Pagliacci, Otello, Tosca....) which is why I love recitals- they pick out the best parts :D

This is one of his best roles I think. Along with his early Otello/ Pagliacci perhaps.

And the odd thing is, I'm not a big Domingo fan. But even singers with poor technique 'click' sometimes and draw me in- lol :)

I am in tears now... and yelling "Bravo" like the audience did (30 years ago)!!!

I'm probably ignorant but this is too pretentious for me, maybe because it is obvious that he is trying to be excellent, and he is, don't get me wrong, but I just can't help it. When I am aware of the singer singing a song that is not my ideal of artistic experience. |
